Teaching children thematic words for seasons and holidays is a crucial part of any literacy curriculum. It allows children to access words that they are introduced to in their daily life and transfer it into their background knowledge. As a former art teacher, I think thematic word walls should be designed to reflect their content.
I designed a pear tree to display my fall word wall. There’s velcro on the back of each fall word card so if students need to spell a word in a writing activity, they are able to access the word, and return it to its proper place on the fall tree.
Plus, given that the fall word wall is a digital file-there’s no worry about missing pieces. Simply print, because a digital file is yours for your entire teaching or homeschool career! Unlike traditional teacher stores, digital files are the way of the future!
Make sure to let the kids hang the pear shaped words on the tree. Pears fall off the tree and end up on the ground, hence the placement of pears on the ground. When students are active participants in creating the fall word wall, it helps them build authenticity during the writing process.
They are aware of the types of words on the thematic word wall and access it instead of asking, “How do I spell ______?”
