Free Spider Unit Poem and Literacy Centers

With October just around the bend, it’s time for many of us to creep into our spider units.  This free printable spider poem and corresponding literacy centers will delight your kids all week long.

Here are the free spider-themed literacy centers included

1.) Visualize the Poem (students draw the poem)

2.) Copycat (copy work to assist in writing stamina and memorization)

3.) Vowel/Consonant Quest (uses Montessori color coding for students to see patterns between vowels/consonants)

4.) Grammar Rainbow (students color-code nouns, verbs, and adjectives with a nod to Montessori)

5.)  Illustrated Poem  (students will have a poem to color with visual cues to help them remember the content)

6.) Word Detective (cloze activity)

7.) Scrambled Up Poems (Sequencing)

8.) Rhyme Time  (discover and extend the rhyme pairs in each stanza)

9.) Pocket Poem (plain text to aid in memorization)

This freebie is a part of a labor of love, my Autumn Poem of the Week unit (there are nine other fall poems and corresponding centers!)

I loved using the Poem of the Week format in my 1st and 2nd grade classrooms, and it is also very successful in my homeschool.  I can cover a ton of ELA ground and standards, without relying on heavy text.  I’m able to differentiate instruction for my son with autism, and my son who reads grade levels above his age.  All students benefit from memorizing poetry, but this unit digs deeper because of the literacy center work.

I hope you enjoy this free spider poetry unit “on the house”.  It will make your ELA planning simple for that week!

Pair this freebie with Karen’s new interactive spider activity! It’s loaded with writing prompts, ELA activities, Science, and Art.  Best of all, it’s also editable!

Meet the Teachers

Meet the Teachers

Back when we were both teaching, we dreamed of a website that would make lesson planning easier. We both remember late nights scouring search engine for unit ideas. After searching 1000s of blogs and sites, nothing was exactly meeting our vision: creative resources for the overworked teacher or homeschooler! So…this was born.
