Pumpkin Art Project for Kids Using Elements of Art

This pumpkin art lesson is designed for the regular classroom teacher who either a.) doesn’t have art as a special class for their students or b.) wants to incorporate visual lessons with measurement.  Unfortunately, in many of our schools here in Chicago, arts are cut to help with school budgets.  Often times, the regular classroom teacher is left to integrate the arts across the curriculum and into the fabric of the school day.

Here’s an interdisciplinary fall art project that highlights the elements of art {texture, space, & shape} and math {measurement} integrated with a pumpkin theme.

Step 1: Start this project by talking about ways to create implied texture. Cover the different types of

  • lines {vertical, horizontal, diagonal, chevron, crosshatching, etc}
  • shapes {squares, circles, hearts, etc}
  • space {positive & negative space} Positive space is the shape or line.  Negative space is the space around that object. Talk about how to leave negative space around an object. This can be done by measuring between lines or shapes. Refer to picture of pumpkin with ruler}

Step 2: Practice these drawing ideas before drawing directly onto the pumpkin template provided. I have my students fold an 8.5″ by 11″ piece of paper into fourths or eighths.  Students first practice types of ways to create implied lines in pencil.  I also give specific directions that all lined patterns need to be spaced 1/4 of an inch apart and drawn with a ruler.

Step 3: Have them pick 3 of their favorite texture drawings.

Step 4: Have them draw on the pumpkin template I provided, alternating their 3 patterns, in pencil {you can always erase pencil!}

This is how I have my students measure out and mark the space between lines. Measuring on one side and then on the other side. Use the ruler to complete straight lines.

This project can been done in many different mediums- pencil, markers, sharpies, crayons, colored pencils, and oil pastels.

Download my large & small pumpkin templates available in two sizes {8×10 pumpkin or 4×5 pumpkin} to complete this art project

A big part of creating is understanding the elements of art. Hope over to our pumpkin themed elements of art activity so your children can discover their potential!

Meet the Teachers

Meet the Teachers

Back when we were both teaching, we dreamed of a website that would make lesson planning easier. We both remember late nights scouring search engine for unit ideas. After searching 1000s of blogs and sites, nothing was exactly meeting our vision: creative resources for the overworked teacher or homeschooler! So…this was born.
