Color is one of the easiest ways to make any project pop! For Christmas this year my niece and I discussed color theory and created these whimsical ornaments. This is just one way to incorporate an art lesson into an activity.
Here’s some suggestions on how to teach a lesson on color theory:
First discussed what a hue is {the name of a spectral color such as red, blue, or yellow} We named all the colors on the color wheel:
- red
- orange
- yellow
- green
- blue
- violet
And filled in our color wheel ornament.
We also talked about primary colors {red, blue, and yellow}. You cannot make primary hues by mixing other hues together. We filled in our primary color ornament.
Next we talked about secondary colors {orange, green blue}. They are made by mixing two primary colors together:
- red and yellow make orange
- red and blue make violet
- blue and yellow make green
And we filled in our secondary ornament.
Then we talked about complementary colors {colors opposite each other on the color wheel}.
- red is opposite green
- blue is opposite orange
- yellow is opposite violet
And we filled in our complementary ornament.
Finally we discussed warm and cool colors. Sometimes the colors are divied into two groups:
Cool colors:
- blue
- green
- violet
Warm colors:
- red
- orange
- yellow
And we filled in our warm and cool color ornaments.
We backed our ornaments with black construction paper, added silver ribbon, and hung them on my red bookshelf. It makes a cute Christmas display in which we learned about the color theory. If you are a teacher, they would make a cute bulletin board or window display too!
